  • Sark & WW2 | Isle of Sark

The Isle of Sark was occupied by German forces during WW2, with commando operations taking place on the island that changed the course of the war significantly. S ark & The War Years Occupation & Liberation Sark was occupied, along with the other Channel Islands, during WWII. The German soldiers arrived on 3rd July, 1940 and remained on the island for nearly 5 years. During that time Dame Sybil, the island's Seigneur, famously kept the soldiers in check and protected her subjects by using her greatest strengths to her advantage: feudal etiquette and good old fashioned class. “You do not appear to be in the least afraid,” one officer said. Without hesitation, Dame Sibyl replied, “Is there any reason why I should be afraid of German officers?” Having a leader who spoke German, as well as French and English, was another great advantage for the people of Sark. Dame Sybil was able to communicate and negotiate better treatment for local residents and convinced the majority of them to stay on Sark during the occupation. This proved to be a saving grace for the island, as mass evacuations on other islands devastated their communities. “I am not promising you that it will be easy,” she told them. “We may be hungry but we will always have our cattle and crops, our gardens, a few pigs, our sheep and rabbits.” Whilst Europe was liberated on 8th May 1945 & Guernsey the following day, Sark was not liberated until 10th May. As Channel Island members of Liberation Route Europe , there are vectors to follow, where you can walk in the footsteps of the allied forces who arrived to liberate the island. “Would you mind being left for a few days, or would you prefer to go to Guernsey with me?”, asked Lieutenant Colonel K. Allen. “As I have been left for nearly five years,” she said, “I can stand a few more days.”, replied Dame Sybil. • Flora | Isle of Sark

The Isle of Sark boasts magnificent varieties of both native and rare flora. The island is known for its colourful wildflowers in Spring and beautiful seasonal displays. Fl ora on Sar k Barren to blossoming! Virtually no records of Sark’s profusion of wildflowers were kept before the nineteenth century. In 1564 Helier de Carteret would have found the island a windswept plateau covered in brambles, bracken and furze with valleys devoid of trees. Today, Sark boasts spectacular, colourful displays of wild flowers, both native and foreign. The island is home to rare species of plants and flowers found in few other places in the world, let alone the British Isles. Each season brings forth different foliage, making Sark's landscape varied, ever-changing and a joy to observe all year round. Wild Flowers in Spring In spring the predominant wild flowers are Bluebells, Red Campion and the White Three-cornered Leek, introduced from the Mediterranean and known locally as wild garlic, which has a triangular stem and a distinctive garlicky smell when crushed. Bluebells can be mainly found blanketing the slopes of Dixcart valley, Port Du Moulin woods, Bluebell woods and on L'Epercquerie Common. The cliff paths and field banks all over the island burst into life with a profusion of Primroses, Dog Violets and Celandines. The bright yellow Gorse, with its sumptuous coconut t y scent, starts to flower in earnest at this time of year and reminds us all that Summer is coming! Vibrant hues of Summer In Summer the white flowers of the Sea Campion coat the slopes and tops of the cliffs. They meet with Foxgloves and Oxeye Daisies, which are also to be seen all over the island, vibrant against the blue hues of the sea. Thrift, Thyme, Rock Samphire and the rarer Golden Samphire appear within the rocky hill sides above the bays. The distinctive Giant Echium grows to over 8 feet tall and soars into view in the most unlikely places. This species was introduced from the Canary Islands, and is now only found in the wild on La Palma island at 2000 feet in the cloud zone laurel forest. All over the island the banks and hedgerows are full of small blue Sheep’s-bit and Honeysuckle, with its delightful scent drifting on a summer breeze. Berries in Autumn Come Autumn, sometimes even in late Summer, the various berries make their appearance. Blackberry picking and jam making is a popular pastime as the berries grow wild in many spots around the island and are easily accessible to all. Paired with local apples its crumble heaven! Along with the Blackberries come the Sloe berries, although not edible they are excellent for making Sloe Gin or Vodka for a festive treat. Bottle up a batch and let sit for a year, makes the perfect Sark Christmas gift. The Winter months Although Winter may see the end of the wild flowers the landscape is far from dreary. The ferns and bracken have now turned and the deep rusty red of the headlands meets strikingly with the steely blue of the sea. In many ways the colours around Sark actually appear deeper and richer in the Winter light, without the brightness of the sun washing them out. Before long the Daffodils rear their jolly yellow heads along the roadsides, brightening even the dullest of days. YOU MAY ALSO LIKE... • The Prison | Isle of Sark

< Home The Prison The smallest working prison in the world. The original Sark Prison stood near to where St. Peter's Church is today. Over time it became dilapidated and by 1832 the Arsenal was being used as an interim prison, despite being entirely unfit for purpose. The little barrel-roofed two-celled prison we know today was eventually built in 1856 and is one of the world’s smallest prisons still in use. Judicial powers granted to Sark in 1583 allow a prisoner to be held for a maximum of two days. If the crime is severe enough to warrant further punishment the offender will be sent to Guernsey prison.

  • Dark Skies | Isle of Sark

The Isle of Sark is the world's first Dark Sky Island, owing to its recognised lack of light pollution and incredible starry displays. The island's observatory is open to the public. Dark Skies Dark Sky Island Status In 2011 Sark gained recognition from the International Dark-Sky Association for its exceptional lack of light pollution, owing largely to the fact that we have no street lights! Sark became the first island community to gain the title of Dark Sky Island. This fantastic accolade helped to fully establish SAstroS, the Sark Astronomy Society ; a band of enthusiastic stargazers eager to share the wonders of Sark's magical night time display with others. The Society funded and runs the island's Observatory and hosts annual Starfest celebrations with renowned guest speakers, normally in the Autumn or Spring to mark both the beginning or end of Winter. For information about visiting the Observatory and how to book an unforgettable astronomical experience please contact the Visitor Centre. Email Just look up! One of the most notable aspects of our dark sky is that no matter where you are on the island, all you have to do to appreciate the incredible starry display is look up! In 2020, one of the founding SAstroS members, Dr Richard Axton, registered a star in celebration of Sark’s recognition as the world’s first Dark Sky Island; 'Sark Island IDA 2011'. In the Star Registry our star is numbered 1565600 – Corona Borealis. A delightful coincidence given that Sark was settled in 1565! The constellation Corona Borealis is to be seen in Spring in the eastern sky, almost above St. Peter's Church, as viewed from the Sark Observatory and will progress to the western sky during the year.
